Helmet – Symbolizes Paul’s service in the war.

Crossed out school – Everything that Paul and his friends learned in school before the

war is of no use to them now. All they need to know is how to kill and survive.

Crossed out war – Paul really comes to dislike the war and everything he’s had to

experience while giving service there. He has lost his friends, family, and home

all in one during this time; for his friends are all three.
